Last day...
I can't believe how quickly this adventure has come to an end.
Last Thursday I left Guyana early in the morning. The days before I was so busy packing and planning my goodbyes to people that I didn't really have time to sit down and let it soak in that I was actually leaving. Leaving my beautiful house, leaving VSO, leaving my Guyanese colleagues and neighbours, leaving the dogs, the minibuses, the loud music, hundreds of birds you hear everywhere, the warm and humid whether, the holes in the road, the puhri, roti, cassava balls, cook up rice, Banks beer and El Dorado rum, leaving the hilarious Creolese language, the garbage, Eddie's and City taxi, palm trees, all fruits and vegetables, my rusty bike, the karaoke bar, Garnette Street, Oasis café, hand washing, the life saving breeze in Georgetown... I am gonna miss this country so much.
The new Speech-Language therapist, Hannah, arrived two days before my departure, so we spent some time together in and around the house and with the other VSOs. I'm happy I got to meet her in person.
I experienced the biggest culture shock at the airport in Barbados, on my way to Chicago. I checked in for my flight to Miami and suddenly I was surrounded by (white, well, mostly red) Americans, coming back from their beach holiday. I felt like they bluntly confronted me with reality and suddenly got emotional. Once in Chicago, seeing Nick and Meg picking me up from the airport, that feeling disappeared; they're like a piece of Guyana and a perfect transfer from one world to another. It was fantastic spending a few days with them and they were incredibly generous. Chicago is wonderful and 3 days is simply not enough to explore this city. Being a proper tourist, I took an architecture boat tour and spotted lots of nice art déco buildings, went up the Sears Tower, and visited Frank Lloyd Wright's house and neighbourhood. The three of us went out for dinner every night, watched movies and a Chicago Bears match (yes, I’m almost understanding American Football). Leaving them yesterday morning was like saying goodbye to Guyana a second time.
Now, half ashamed and half excited, I'm enjoying one-and-a-half day of luxury in Barbados; I'm staying in an ocean view suite with king size bed, huge flat screen tv, and living room with kitchenette! Barbados is like Guyana, but with a blue ocean instead of grey, more 'whities', and fifty times more hotels and resorts.
Thursday morning, after having had seven flights in seven days (I’m not so sure if I still like flying that much as I did before…), I’m back in The Netherlands. The first week I’ll stay with my parents in the north, to catch up with them and my family. The next three weeks I’m looking after a house in Haarlem, which will make it easier to visit people living in West-Holland. Soon after that I hope to have a job. Hmm, we’ll see.
Thank you all so much for all updates and support from home–and from the rest of the world! Hopefully I can hold on to this blog a little longer, so I can keep you posted.
this was a great message jente - very moving to read!!!! it made me wish we could all go back and do it again.
enjoy barbados!!

Oh boy did your 'leaving' note bring Guyana back to me in full force. It is so easy to let it drift out of your mind as you experience the present in the cool days of Autumn with the changing leaves and threats of snow. It made me feel like I was back in Georgetown and made me realise how much I miss chatting to you all. I do hope that like Rob and Dawn you will make British Columbia a destination know that you are welcome here any time. Thanks Jente and good luck with the relaxation and job search. Love as ever, Jacky....and Mick

Lieve Jent,
We houden contact. Tot snel.
Dikke kus Pam xxx

Hi Jente!!!
Welcome home in our way too cold country. I've missed the seasons, but hate them already. Nice to see Nick, Meg, Jacky and Mick are still in touch. Hi every one.
Elske and I hope to see you soon.

Haaa Jent,
